Somaliland's National Electoral Commission (NEC) announcement on February 1, 2026, postponing parliamentary and local council elections from May 31, 2026, to March 2027—citing prolonged drought, security challenges in eastern regions like Sool, incomplete voter registration, and disagreements among the three main parties—has solidified trader consensus at 66% for no election before 2027. Incumbent Waddani party, led by President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, leads party odds at 12% amid its current parliamentary majority from the 2021 vote, followed by opposition Kulmiye (6.8%) and UCID (4.3%). Critics allege parliamentary boycotts over electoral law amendments and absent budget funding contributed to the delay, though President Irro consulted parties beforehand; upcoming procedural hurdles could further impact timelines in Somaliland's multi-party system.
