Amid escalating attacks by Iran-aligned militias on U.S. diplomatic facilities and forces in Iraq, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad remains open but on ordered departure status since early March 2026, with non-essential personnel evacuated due to imminent threats. A April 2 security alert warned of potential strikes in central Baghdad within 24-48 hours, urging all American citizens to depart immediately, followed by another on April 8 and a drone attack near the embassy convoy at Baghdad International Airport on April 12.
