Ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro's recent Manhattan federal court appearance on March 26 underscored the ongoing narco-terrorism and drug-trafficking case brought by US prosecutors, as Judge Alvin Hellerstein denied a motion to dismiss charges while scrutinizing sanctions blocking Venezuelan funds for his defense. This procedural win for the Department of Justice advances the indictment—originally unsealed in 2020—toward trial amid disputes over head-of-state immunity and right to counsel, keeping trader consensus tightly contested with no prison time slightly leading at 33.5% over a 60+ year sentence at 28.5%. Potential separation hinges on plea negotiations, evidentiary hearings, or diplomatic interventions, against a backdrop of Maduro's detention in a Brooklyn jail following his January extradition.
