Romuald Wadagni's commanding trader consensus as Benin's ruling coalition candidate stems from the presidential majority's total sweep of all 109 National Assembly seats in the January 2026 parliamentary elections, solidifying institutional control ahead of the April 12 presidential vote. As Finance Minister and President Patrice Talon's designated successor—respecting constitutional two-term limits—Wadagni launched his northern campaign on March 27 with vows for new municipal police to combat jihadist threats, while securing near-unanimous party backing. Opposition FCBE's Paul Hounkpè remains the sole authorized challenger, but his recent Mono region rallies and governance platform have failed to erode Wadagni's momentum amid restricted field. A runoff within 15 days could occur if no absolute majority, though scandals, voter turnout surges, or legal challenges would be needed to shift dynamics.
