US airstrikes on March 25 targeted over 85 Iran-backed militia sites in Iraq and Syria, retaliating for attacks on American troops that killed three US service members earlier in the year. Iran condemned the strikes as a violation of sovereignty, with Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian warning of an "inevitable response," while Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei signaled readiness for escalation. However, Tehran has relied on proxies like Hezbollah and Houthis—whose Red Sea attacks persist amid UK and US counterstrikes—avoiding direct confrontation by March 31. Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon and Syrian positions added regional pressure, but no verified Iranian direct strikes occurred before the deadline, reflecting deterrence dynamics and diplomatic posturing.
