California Governor Gavin Newsom, approaching the end of his term-limited tenure in January 2027, has not formally announced a 2028 presidential bid despite recent polling showing him trouncing rivals like Kamala Harris among California Democrats in hypothetical primary matchups. In national interviews over the past week, including with POLITICO, he has warned of Democratic vulnerabilities in 2028 without committing, consistent with his October 2025 pledge to decide post-November 2026 midterm elections. His book tour and media blitz have elevated his profile as a potential frontrunner, though critics cite California's ongoing homelessness and cost-of-living issues as drags. Key upcoming catalysts include midterm outcomes and early 2027 primary filing deadlines.
