Trader sentiment on Google Gemini achieving a breakthrough score on the FrontierMath benchmark—a rigorous test of advanced mathematical reasoning featuring unpublished research-level problems across tiers 1-4—hinges on stagnant progress amid fierce competition from OpenAI's GPT-5.4, which leads at 47.6% overall. Gemini 3.1 Pro, released in early 2026, scores comparably to Gemini 3 Pro at around 37% on tiers 1-3 and minimal gains on tier 4, reflecting incremental scaling limits rather than paradigm shifts in reasoning capabilities. Recent independent evaluations as of mid-April confirm Gemini trailing at 36.9%, with no major announcements signaling a June 30 leap. Key catalysts include potential Gemini 4 previews at Google I/O (May 2026) or compute-driven updates, though historical delays in AI math benchmarks temper expectations for rapid resolution.
