Traders' 97.9% implied probability on "No" reflects Somaliland's enduring lack of diplomatic recognition since 1991, despite de facto independence, anchored by African Union policy upholding Somalia's territorial integrity. Recent UAE-mediated talks in December 2024 between Ethiopia and Somalia eased tensions from their January port-access MoU, with Addis Ababa reaffirming Somalia's sovereignty and shelving recognition prospects. No governments have announced intentions to recognize Somaliland before the March 31 deadline, consistent with historical inertia and pressures from regional bodies like IGAD. Only a sudden geopolitical shift—such as Western endorsement amid Horn of Africa realignments or an abrupt bilateral deal—could alter trader consensus in the remaining weeks.

This market will resolve to "Yes" if any other UN member state formally recognizes the Republic of Somaliland as a sovereign state by March 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No".
Only formal recognition of Somaliland will qualify. Statements/actions which acknowledge the Republic of Somaliland, or change its diplomatic status with a relevant country, but do not formally recognize the Republic of Somaliland as a sovereign state will not qualify.
The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the government of a recognizing country; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
