The Makerfield by-election on 18 June features a contest dominated by Labour candidate Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor seeking a parliamentary seat as a potential leadership platform, and Reform UK’s Robert Kenyon, a local plumber and councillor positioned as the primary challenger. Recent polling averages place Burnham narrowly ahead, establishing him as the likely winner while positioning Kenyon to finish second in what remains a competitive two-way race. Kenyon has emphasized local grievances and distanced himself from national party dynamics, while Burnham has framed the contest around broader Labour renewal. Minor candidates including Rebecca Shepherd and others trail significantly with limited support, reinforcing the focus on the leading pair. The outcome will depend on turnout among key voting blocs in the Greater Manchester constituency ahead of the vote.
