Federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein rejected Nicolás Maduro's motion to dismiss narco-terrorism conspiracy charges on March 26, 2026, amid disputes over his access to Venezuelan funds for legal defense, solidifying the U.S. Department of Justice case three months after his January capture in Caracas. Held in high-security pretrial detention at the Metropolitan Detention Center, the ousted Venezuelan leader faces potential life imprisonment if convicted on the superseding Southern District of New York indictment alleging drug trafficking and arms conspiracies with his wife and inner circle. Trader consensus remains tightly split between no prison time (34%) and 60+ months (30%), reflecting uncertainties in trial proceedings, evidentiary challenges to his arrest, possible plea negotiations, or jurisdictional defenses; upcoming arraignment developments or rulings on bail and evidence disclosure could widen the gap.
