The European Central Bank has held its deposit facility rate at 2.00% following the April 2026 meeting, with incoming data showing euro area inflation rising to 3.0% in April and preliminary estimates near 3.2% in May, driven primarily by energy price surges linked to Middle East supply disruptions. Professional forecasters and Reuters polls now anticipate a 25-basis-point hike at the June 11 meeting and possible further tightening later in the year, reflecting upside risks to inflation and the Governing Council's data-dependent stance aimed at returning price growth to the 2% medium-term target. Subdued GDP growth forecasts for 2026 have not offset these pressures, leading traders to price in limited scope for any rate reductions during the year.
