The 2026 United Kingdom local elections on May 7 saw governing Labour suffer historic losses, shedding hundreds of council seats across 136 English authorities contesting over 5,000 positions, with final tallies still emerging as of May 9. Reform UK surged with substantial gains from a low base, capturing voter frustration on immigration and economic pressures, while Greens advanced on urban left-wing issues, fragmenting Labour's 2022 gains made under Tory rule. Pre-election polls showed Labour trailing at 18% national equivalent vote versus Reform's 25%, underscoring mid-term backlash against budget cuts and policy delivery. No major events remain before resolution, though seat projections confirm trader focus on Labour's diminished hold.
