Katharina Pötter, the incumbent CDU Oberbürgermeisterin since 2021, holds the leading position in the September 13, 2026, direct election due to established name recognition, prior council experience, and party backing. The fragmented field of challengers—including SPD nominee Robert Alferink, Green candidate Volker Bajus, FDP’s Oliver Hasskamp, Die Linke’s Thomas Groß, and AfD’s Thorsten Wassermann—has prevented any single opponent from consolidating broad support ahead of the vote and potential September 27 runoff. Recent candidate nominations and local campaign activity have clarified the lineup without major shifts, aligning trader consensus with Pötter’s structural edge from incumbency while leaving room for runoff scenarios or late momentum in the remaining campaign days.
