California's 48th congressional district primary on June 2 features an open seat after incumbent Darrell Issa retired and endorsed San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, who also received backing from President Trump. Redistricting under Proposition 50 shifted the San Diego- and Riverside-area district from a Republican lean to a narrow Democratic advantage. Desmond faces limited Republican competition, while a crowded Democratic field includes San Diego City Councilmember Marni von Wilpert, Ammar Campa-Najjar, Brandon Riker, and several others. Recent polling shows Desmond leading overall, with Democratic support split among multiple contenders. The top-two finishers advance to the November general election regardless of party.
