California's 48th Congressional District primary on June 2 uses the state's top-two system, with the two highest vote-getters advancing to the November general regardless of party. Redistricting shifted the San Diego-area seat toward a slight Democratic lean, prompting incumbent Darrell Issa to retire in March and endorse San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond. Desmond secured President Trump's backing and leads recent polls by double digits amid minimal Republican competition. Democrats face a crowded field that includes Ammar Campa-Najjar, Marni von Wilpert, and others, with vote-splitting among them creating uncertainty over which candidate will join Desmond in the general. Polling averages place Desmond near 28 percent while no single Democrat exceeds 12 percent, highlighting the fragmented contest.
