U.S. ground beef prices have climbed to record levels near $6.90 per pound as of April 2026, driven by the smallest national cattle herd in decades amid persistent drought conditions and elevated feed costs that have constrained supply. The USDA’s latest outlook projects beef prices to rise more than 10% for the full year, with retail all-fresh beef already approaching $10 per pound in early 2026 data. Strong consumer demand persists despite affordability pressures, while increased lean-beef imports help support ground-product availability. Key near-term catalysts include summer barbecue-season demand and the next USDA supply-and-demand updates, which will clarify whether 2026 production shortfalls push prices toward new highs before any potential herd-rebuilding cycle begins to ease tightness later in the decade.

The St. Louis Fed bases its numbers for ground beef prices on the BLS's CPI release. This market will immediately resolve to "Yes" upon a qualifying update of the St. Louis Fed's chart. If no data for any month of 2026 is released by the scheduled date for the January 2027 CPI release, this market will resolve according to the data for 2026 already available at that time.
The resolution source for this market measures prices to the third decimal place. Thus, this is the level of precision that will be used when resolving the market.
