Major players including SpaceX after its xAI merger and Google via Project Suncatcher are accelerating plans for orbital AI data centers, driven by terrestrial power and land constraints for large language model training. SpaceX filed in early 2026 for up to one million satellites targeting 100 GW of compute, with Musk stating space-based systems could deliver the lowest-cost AI inference within two to three years. Starcloud completed an NVIDIA H100 training demonstration in orbit and filed for an 88,000-satellite constellation with Blackwell hardware slated for late 2026. Google partnered with Planet Labs for prototype launches by early 2027. Traders see significant technical and regulatory hurdles ahead of any operational deployment, keeping near-term resolution probabilities low despite these concrete filings and demonstrations.
