World No. 1 Wang Chuqin enters his ITTF World Cup Macao 2026 group stage opener against Romania's Eduard Ionescu as a slim trader favorite at 50.5% implied probability, reflecting the Romanian's breakout form amid table tennis's upset-prone nature. Ionescu, a career-high No. 45 after stunning Alexis Lebrun and claiming Romania's national title last week, has fueled competitive balance with aggressive play in recent WTT events. Wang's first 2026 loss— a 2-4 quarterfinal defeat to Sora Matsushima at WTT Champions Chongqing on March 14—ended his unbeaten streak, introducing caution despite his 1-0 head-to-head edge from 2024 Saudi Smash. The best-of-five format amplifies volatility; Wang's forehand power could dominate if he regains rhythm, while Ionescu's speed might tip odds via early pressure or errors.
