Ausar Thompson's commanding position as the implied leader in the NBA steals per game market stems from his league-leading 2.0 SPG average through 72 games in the 2025-26 regular season for the Detroit Pistons, clinched after the April 12 conclusion. Official NBA stats list him atop the leaderboard, edging tied challengers like Dyson Daniels (2.0 SPG in 76 games) via tiebreaker conventions such as total steals or games played qualifiers. Thompson's elite perimeter defense shone recently, topping March at 2.5 SPG and averaging 2.5 steals with 4.8 deflections over the past month amid Detroit's strong 59-22 finish. Challengers like Cason Wallace (1.9 SPG) face insurmountable gaps, though improbable official stat revisions or disputes could theoretically shift resolution.
