Frances Tiafoe, the No. 2 seed and 2023 US Men's Clay Court Championships titlist with a stellar 13-6 Houston record, entered the round of 16 as the clear favorite against Rinky Hijikata due to his No. 18 ranking, 2-1 head-to-head lead—including a straight-sets Delray Beach win this year—and superior clay experience at River Oaks Country Club. Hijikata, ranked No. 102, earned his spot by defeating Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 6-2 in the first round, marking his first 2026 clay win amid a 16-10 season overall. No injuries reported, but Tiafoe's home advantage and stylistic edge on the slower surface drove trader sentiment toward the American, with Hijikata's momentum providing upset potential in this first clay matchup.
