McCartney Kessler, ranked No. 51 with a 6-6 YTD record including a Miami second-round run, holds the experience edge over No. 154 Elvina Kalieva in their Credit One Charleston Open first-round clash on green clay, where both have limited WTA success—Kessler 0-6 lifetime, Kalieva 0-1. Kalieva enters as a lucky loser after dominating Madison Brengle 6-2, 6-0 in qualifying before a 1-6, 1-6 defeat to Akasha Urhobo, showcasing her 12-4 YTD form mostly at lower levels. No head-to-head exists, but Kessler's higher-level recent play and home-crowd support on the faster Har-Tru surface shape trader consensus for a competitive matchup, with Kalieva's qualifier momentum and movement posing upset potential absent injury concerns.
