Top-seeded Ben Shelton, ATP world No. 9 and 2024 US Men's Clay Court champion, holds a strong edge entering his second-round matchup against Zhizhen Zhang (No. 263) on outdoor clay at River Oaks Country Club, buoyed by an 11-4 record this season and a first-round bye for rest. Zhang, struggling at 3-4 in 2026, advanced yesterday with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 win over Jack Pinnington Jones, showcasing baseline consistency that echoes their 1-1 head-to-head—including a third-round clay clash at 2024 Rome Masters. Shelton's power game and home-crowd support contrast Zhang's lower-ranked form, though stylistic matchup and recent doubles play could test the American's readiness amid humid Houston conditions.
