Since their August 2025 summit in Alaska, Presidents Trump and Putin have maintained phone diplomacy—including a March 9 call on Ukraine peace prospects and Iran tensions—but no further in-person meetings have materialized despite October 2025 plans collapsing over Ukraine front-line terms. Trump announced on March 26 dispatching envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow next week for direct talks with Putin aimed at ending the Ukraine war, signaling active U.S.-Russia engagement through intermediaries amid sanctions relief discussions. With no scheduled Trump-Putin summit and ongoing Middle East escalations complicating logistics, trader consensus implies significant barriers to a near-term meeting, though Witkoff's outcome could influence future diplomacy.
