Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to shape sentiment around potential disruptions at the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical chokepoint handling roughly 10-15% of global seaborne trade. Houthi threats in April 2026 to close the waterway in response to U.S.-Israeli actions against Iran have kept markets attentive, though the strait remains open with normal vessel transits reported through early June. No commercial ship attacks have occurred since the October 2025 ceasefire, supporting steady shipping volumes and containing immediate upward pressure on tanker rates or Brent crude benchmarks. Trader focus centers on escalation risks tied to broader regional conflicts, with resolution hinging on IMF PortWatch arrival data thresholds. Key upcoming catalysts include any renewed Houthi activity or diplomatic de-escalation that could alter transit flows in coming months.
