Alexander Shevchenko, ranked No. 76 with a career-high of 45, enters Monte Carlo Masters qualifying as the higher seed against No. 130 Andrea Pellegrino in their first head-to-head on outdoor clay. Shevchenko carries momentum from a stunning Miami third-round upset over Ben Shelton last month and a Bucharest quarterfinal run, boasting a 43% ATP clay win rate despite limited recent success on the surface. Pellegrino, an Italian clay specialist with a modest 4-5 ATP clay record, retired injured in Marrakech last week after winning the first set versus Skatov, casting doubt on his fitness amid prior groin issues. Mild spring conditions (14-18°C) favor baseline rallies, but Shevchenko's health and ranking edge shape trader sentiment in this Q1 clash.
