Recent Middle East energy price shocks have driven euro-area inflation to 3.0% in April 2026 and prompted the ECB to lift its 2026 inflation projection to 2.6%, tilting trader sentiment toward a modest policy tightening by the July 23 meeting. With the deposit facility held at 2.00% after the April 30 decision, the Governing Council has stressed data dependence amid intensified upside inflation risks and downside growth risks. Market-implied odds of 61.5% for no change and 32.5% for a 25-basis-point hike reflect this cautious hawkish tilt, consistent with money-market pricing of limited tightening through mid-year while longer-term expectations remain anchored near the 2% target. Upcoming June and July data releases on inflation and activity will be key swing factors.
