The Federal Reserve's September rate hike to the 3.75-4.00% target range, alongside projections for additional tightening amid persistent inflation, has tempered multiple expansion despite the index's 13%+ year-to-date advance. Key swing factors include upcoming October and December FOMC decisions, September and October CPI releases, and Q3 earnings reports that could validate or challenge consensus EPS forecasts around $360. Higher Treasury yields and energy price volatility add downside risks, while resilient labor data and AI capex trends support the market-implied path toward 7,800-8,100 by year-end.
