President Donald Trump launched Project Freedom on May 4, 2026, as a U.S. naval escort operation to protect commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz following Iranian attacks and blockade. The initiative paused within 48 hours after requests from Pakistan and other nations, alongside reported progress toward a broader U.S.-Iran ceasefire and political agreement. Ongoing bilateral negotiations, including responses to Iranian proposals with associated timelines, remain the dominant factor holding restart probabilities low. Any explicit White House announcement directing U.S. Central Command to resume escorts would resolve related markets, while sustained de-escalation signals or finalized accords could further reduce near-term resumption likelihood.
