The Workers' Party's 8th National Congress in late April 2026 approved a manifesto explicitly framing President Lula da Silva's re-election as the path to democratic continuity, building on his October 2025 announcement of a fourth nonconsecutive term bid and solidifying him as the party's lead candidate ahead of the October 4 first-round vote. Party leadership, including president Edinho Silva, has prioritized broad alliances and state-level sacrifices to bolster Lula's path, amid polls showing him ahead of rivals like Flávio Bolsonaro despite disapproval ratings climbing to 52-53% in early May surveys. Recent O Globo reporting on contingency testing of alternatives like Fernando Haddad reflects caution, but trader consensus at 86% yes implies strong internal momentum for formal nomination at PT's required convention before the August 15 candidacy registration deadline, barring health setbacks or polling collapse.
