A federal grand jury in Montgomery, Alabama, indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center on April 21, 2026, for 11 counts of wire fraud, false statements, and conspiracy to commit money laundering, alleging the organization funneled over $3 million to informants in extremist groups via fictitious companies, misleading donors. SPLC leadership pleaded not guilty on May 7 amid expert skepticism over the DOJ's case under the Trump administration, which recently severed FBI ties with the group. Alabama's attorney general launched a parallel civil probe days ago, sustaining trader consensus at 59.5% implied probability of conviction before year-end, with an October trial potentially delivering a verdict within the resolution window despite SPLC's vow to fight the charges.
