Recent high-profile defections have strengthened the Bangsamoro Federalist Party (BFP) ahead of the September 14, 2026, parliamentary vote, the region’s first regular election under the Bangsamoro Organic Law. Interim Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua’s mid-August switch to BFP and assumption of its leadership, following earlier moves by Cotabato City officials and numerous local executives, has shifted momentum away from the United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP), the MILF-affiliated incumbent. Comelec previously designated UBJP the dominant majority party, yet trader consensus now favors BFP at 59.5 percent against UBJP’s 40.5 percent. The contest remains tight because both parties draw from overlapping MILF-era networks, local clan structures, and sectoral lists, with final party-list and district outcomes dependent on turnout among roughly 2.3 million registered voters and last-minute coalition alignments.
