President Trump launched Project Freedom in early May 2026 as a limited U.S. military escort operation to restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz after Iran's blockade during the 2026 Iran conflict and subsequent ceasefire. The initiative began on May 4 but was paused within 24 hours amid reported progress in bilateral peace talks and requests from regional partners. Negotiations between the U.S. and Iran continue toward a broader agreement that could determine whether the operation resumes. Recent administration signals, including statements from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and media reports on potential restarts, reflect the interplay between military posture and diplomatic timelines. Any resumption would hinge on developments in those talks or shifts in Iranian naval activity within the resolution window.
