Major technology firms are accelerating plans for orbital AI data centers to leverage abundant solar power and eliminate terrestrial cooling and land constraints. SpaceX and xAI, following their February 2026 merger, filed with the FCC for a constellation of up to one million satellites targeting 100 gigawatts of compute, with Elon Musk projecting cost leadership within two to three years. Starcloud achieved the first orbital large language model training using an NVIDIA H100 in late 2025 and plans an October 2026 follow-on mission with Blackwell hardware. Google’s Project Suncatcher, partnered with Planet Labs, targets prototype satellite launches in early 2027 for distributed AI workloads. Ongoing SpaceX-Google launch discussions and NVIDIA’s new space-optimized platforms add momentum, yet regulatory approvals, power scaling, and launch economics remain key hurdles before qualifying operational deployments.
