Rising terrestrial power demands and land constraints from AI training and inference workloads are pushing interest in orbital data centers, where abundant solar energy and passive cooling could offer advantages. NVIDIA’s March 2026 announcement of radiation-tolerant Space-1 Vera Rubin modules and IGX Thor platforms for orbital AI compute has accelerated hardware readiness, while Google’s Project Suncatcher research targets initial satellite tests in 2027. Startups such as Starcloud and Orbital are advancing parallel efforts, with Orbital scheduling an AI-inference satellite launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 for April 2027. Elon Musk has publicly stated space-based training could become the lowest-cost option within five years, drawing support from figures at OpenAI, Amazon, and NVIDIA. Key swing factors for market resolution include successful demonstration of inter-satellite optical links, radiation-hardened performance at scale, and regulatory approval for larger orbital deployments.

“Orbital data center” refers to any spacecraft, satellite, or equivalent technology carrying computing infrastructure that is launched into Earth’s orbit for the purpose of providing data-center, cloud-computing, or artificial intelligence computing services and which includes at least 100 data-center-grade AI accelerators, GPUs, TPUs, or substantially equivalent compute processors, (e.g. NVIDIA H100 GPUs, Google TPUs, or equivalent or successor chips).
“Successfully launched” refers to any launch which successfully places a qualifying orbital data center into Earth’s orbit.
The primary resolution source for this market will be a consensus of credible reporting.
