Recent EIA data showed a surprise 17.4 million barrel build in U.S. commercial crude inventories for the week ending August 7, lifting stocks to 424.4 million barrels—the largest weekly increase since early 2023 and well above expectations of a draw. This followed prior declines driven by elevated refinery runs, strong export demand, and reduced net imports amid global supply disruptions from the Strait of Hormuz. The EIA’s Short-Term Energy Outlook projects inventories staying near or below five-year averages through year-end, around 396–432 million barrels. The next weekly reports, due August 19 and 26, will directly influence the August 28 resolution, with trader focus on refinery utilization rates, export volumes, and any further geopolitical impacts on import flows.
