South Korea’s annual CPI inflation for 2026 faces upward pressure from elevated oil prices tied to Middle East tensions, a weak won, and second-round effects from prior cost shocks, alongside demand-side forces from robust semiconductor-driven growth and recovering consumption. August 2026 headline inflation printed at 3.1% year-over-year, with core accelerating to 3.4%, exceeding the Bank of Korea’s 2% target and prompting back-to-back rate hikes to 3.00%. The central bank’s latest forecast holds headline at 2.7% for the full year while lifting core to 2.5%, reflecting sticky services and wage pressures amid 3.3% GDP growth expectations. Trader sentiment remains split as recent prints above 3% compete with expectations that fiscal measures and base effects could moderate the average, with September data and further monetary policy signals as key swing factors.
