In the BMW Open quarterfinals on outdoor clay in Munich, higher-ranked American Ben Shelton faces 19-year-old Brazilian prodigy Joao Fonseca in their first ATP head-to-head. Shelton, the 2025 runner-up, launched his clay swing with a 21-ace statement win in Houston—his first clay match in nearly a year—advancing here past tough opponents with his lefty serve overpowering slower conditions. Fonseca, a natural clay courter, impressed in recent rounds with aggressive baseline winners and upsets like over Berrettini earlier in the spring, gliding effortlessly on the surface amid cool Munich weather favoring endurance rallies. No injuries reported; Shelton's power edges consensus, but Fonseca's speed and topspin pose upset potential in a stamina test.
