Iranian authorities have repeatedly imposed nationwide internet blackouts during periods of domestic unrest and external conflict, most recently from January 8 to May 26, 2026—the longest such disruption on record. The shutdown began amid economic protests that erupted in late December 2025 and intensified after U.S. and Israeli strikes in late February, allowing security forces to limit information flow, hinder coordination among demonstrators, and obscure casualties from the ensuing crackdown. Officials cited risks of espionage and cyberattacks as justification, while monitoring groups documented near-total isolation from global networks despite retention of the domestic intranet. Economic losses reached tens of millions of dollars daily, prompting partial restoration in late May. Trader assessments of future total blackouts hinge on ongoing protest risks, regional tensions, and the regime’s established pattern of deploying connectivity restrictions for control during crises.
