Nonfarm payrolls declined by 23,000 against pre-release expectations of roughly 80,000–85,000 gains, with the rate edging below the 4.2 percent consensus forecast amid a further drop in labor force participation to multi-year lows. This outcome reflects softening labor demand and participation trends that outweighed seasonal factors, leaving limited scope for revision-driven shifts before final resolution.
