US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein set a June 1, 2027, trial date in the Southern District of New York for Nicolás Maduro on four felony counts including narco-terrorism conspiracy and cocaine importation conspiracy. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, pleaded not guilty in January 2026 after their capture and transfer to US custody. Defense counsel has signaled plans to seek dismissal on head-of-state immunity grounds, drawing on precedents such as the Noriega prosecution while highlighting unresolved questions about Maduro's status as de facto ruler. With the trial more than ten months away, procedural motions, potential plea negotiations, and the inherent uncertainties of complex extraterritorial drug and terrorism cases contribute to trader expectations that conviction on every count remains unlikely.
