The Bank of Japan’s September 17-18 policy meeting carries a 98% market-implied probability of a 25 basis point rate increase to 1.25% from the current 1.00% level, reflecting trader consensus on accelerating normalization. Persistent upside risks to inflation—driven by energy price pass-through from Middle East tensions, yen volatility, and AI-related demand—have prompted hawkish signals from board members and a shift toward shorter intervals between hikes since the June move. Japan’s underlying inflation tracking near the 2% target, combined with resilient real wage growth and export momentum, supports the view that the economy can absorb tighter policy without derailing recovery. A significantly weaker-than-expected data release, sharp yen appreciation, or dovish guidance on future pace could still introduce modest downside risk to the hike odds ahead of the decision.
