Harry Wendelken, ranked No. 241 and seeded seventh in the Koyushokucho Miyazaki Challenger, entered as the favorite against qualifier Justin Boulais (No. 458) in their first-round matchup on hard courts, reflecting trader consensus on Wendelken's superior experience. Wendelken arrived in strong form off a semifinal run at last week's Yokkaichi Challenger, where he beat Yuta Shimizu 6-3 6-4 before a 6-4 2-6 6-4 loss to Rio Noguchi, boasting a 20-8 YTD record (8-3 hard). Boulais impressed in qualifying with dominant 6-0 6-0 wins over Takaya Ishii and Masamichi Imamura on March 29-30, riding a 13-5 season (10-3 hard) including an M25 Faro final. No injuries or withdrawals reported; factors like travel fatigue from Yokkaichi and Boulais's lefty one-handed backhand added upset potential in best-of-three sets.
