The S&P 500 closed August 2026 near 7,677, up modestly for the month after hitting an intraday peak of 7,799 on August 13 and posting roughly 12-13% year-to-date gains. Record Q2 earnings growth, revised to +52% year-over-year with 15-16% revenue expansion and 86% beat rates across sectors, provided the primary support, fueled by AI-related capex and energy tailwinds. Persistent inflation, with July PCE at 3.7% year-over-year, prompted a hawkish Jackson Hole message from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, shifting market-implied odds toward rate hikes by year-end rather than cuts. Traders now focus on the August employment report and September FOMC for clarity on monetary policy path versus earnings momentum.
