Maine’s 2nd congressional district race remains competitive ahead of the November 2026 general election following Democratic incumbent Jared Golden’s retirement. Former Republican Governor Paul LePage secured his party’s nomination without opposition, while state Auditor Matthew Dunlap prevailed in the Democratic primary. Recent polling shows the two candidates essentially tied, with one July survey placing Dunlap at 49 percent and LePage at 48 percent. The district’s rural character and stronger Republican performance in statewide contests provide LePage an advantage that traders appear to price into the modest GOP lead. Key variables that could widen the gap include turnout among independent voters, the impact of ranked-choice voting on the final tally, and any late-cycle shifts in national midterm dynamics.
