High polarization between the leading AfD and incumbent SPD in recent polls, combined with the AfD's recent strong performance in Saxony-Anhalt, has heightened mobilization on both sides ahead of the September 20 Landtag election. Traders see this contest, alongside the concurrent Berlin vote, as likely to exceed the 2021 turnout of 70.8% due to elevated participation patterns observed in other recent German state elections and the prospect of significant shifts in the state government. Lowering the voting age to 16 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern further expands the eligible electorate, supporting expectations of increased engagement without offsetting factors like widespread apathy emerging in current reporting.
