**The Storm Prediction Center’s preliminary tally of 96 tornadoes for August 2026 places the count squarely inside the 80–99 bin that traders have priced at 90.3%.** This figure sits modestly above the 1991–2020 August average of 81 and reflects two notable outbreaks on the 11th and 20th that produced clusters of mostly weak (EF0–EF1) tornadoes across the Midwest and Northeast. El Niño conditions, which typically suppress Great Plains instability through altered jet-stream positioning and reduced CAPE, appear to have limited overall activity without driving totals far below normal. Final National Centers for Environmental Information counts are scheduled for release around 9 September and historically show only modest revisions from SPC preliminary numbers, so a substantial shift outside the 80–99 range would require unusually large downward adjustments or additional late-month confirmations.
