President Nicușor Dan’s nomination of Eugen Tomac as prime minister-designate on June 4 has positioned the PMP leader and MEP as the frontrunner to form a technocratic cabinet, aligning with the current market consensus. The move followed the May 5 no-confidence vote that ousted the prior grand coalition government led by Ilie Bolojan, after the Social Democrats withdrew from the alliance in late April amid disputes over fiscal reforms. Tomac, who resigned his party chairmanship ahead of the designation, has 10 days to secure parliamentary support for a non-partisan cabinet focused on stabilizing policy and EU fund access. Other figures, including PSD’s Sorin Grindeanu, trail as parties weigh coalition options without triggering snap elections before 2028. This recent institutional step accounts for the pronounced lead in trader assessments.

To count for resolution, the individual must be formally appointed by the President of Romania and receive a vote of confidence from Parliament, resulting in the official formation of a new government. Any interim or caretaker Prime Minister who does not receive a parliamentary vote of confidence will not count toward the resolution of this market.
If no such Prime Minister takes office by December 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “Other”.
The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the Government of Romania; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
