Recent premieres at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival have created a tightly contested Palme d’Or race, with Pawel Pawlikowski’s Fatherland, Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden, and Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord emerging as the clearest frontrunners on the strength of enthusiastic audience responses and favorable early critical consensus. Standing ovations ranging from ten to twelve minutes for these titles, alongside strong showings from Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Minotaur and Arthur Harari’s The Unknown, reflect a competitive field where returning Palme winners like Mungiu and acclaimed directors such as Pawlikowski benefit from historical precedent and guild-level buzz. Traders are weighing late-festival momentum, jury deliberations, and the potential for an upset from darker-horse entries as the awards ceremony approaches.
