Xavier Becerra holds a commanding lead in Santa Clara County primary voting due to his strong performance among Democratic voters in the June 2, 2026, statewide contest, where he topped the field and advanced to the general election against Republican Steve Hilton after late ballot drops shifted results in his favor. As former California attorney general and U.S. HHS secretary, Becerra benefited from establishment support and voter consolidation following the withdrawal or weaker showings of rivals including Katie Porter, Tom Steyer, and Antonio Villaraigosa. Santa Clara’s heavily Democratic electorate amplified this advantage in preliminary tallies. A narrow upset remains possible only if remaining mail and provisional ballots produce an unusually large swing toward Steyer or another Democrat, though current margins make that outcome improbable.
