FIFA officials and participating federations have repeatedly affirmed that Iran will compete in the 2026 World Cup as drawn, following qualification through AFC pathways. Recent statements from FIFA President Infantino, Italian sports authorities rejecting any switch, and U.S. diplomatic assurances that Iranian players remain welcome have solidified expectations that no vacancy will arise. Geopolitical tensions tied to U.S. co-hosting prompted brief speculation about alternatives such as the UAE or Italy, yet these remain outside FIFA statutes governing withdrawals and have drawn swift pushback. Only an unprecedented official Iranian withdrawal before the tournament would trigger contingency measures, most likely an AFC playoff rather than an ad-hoc replacement.
