Trader sentiment on the Oscars 2027 Best Documentary Feature remains fluid this early in the 2026 cycle, with American Doctor holding the clearest early lead through strong festival momentum, audience awards, and a high-profile acquisition that has positioned it as a timely vérité portrait of U.S. physicians. The broad cluster of other contenders around similar implied probabilities underscores the absence of dominant precursors or breakout releases, leaving room for films like Once Upon a Time in Harlem and Nuisance Bear to gain traction via critical reception or guild attention later. Historical patterns show documentary winners typically emerge from strong fall festival premieres at venues such as Telluride, Venice, and TIFF, where industry narrative and branch voter sentiment begin to coalesce. Upcoming screenings and any late-2026 acquisitions could quickly reshape the field before shortlist voting narrows the race in December.
