The Bank of Canada’s September 2 decision to hold the overnight rate steady at 2.25% for the seventh consecutive meeting has anchored trader expectations for another pause at the October 28 announcement, which will include the quarterly Monetary Policy Report. Recent data show the economy evolving broadly in line with the July outlook: Q2 GDP expanded 3.3% amid resilient consumer spending and housing activity, while core inflation measures remain near the 2% target even as headline CPI hovers around 3% due to elevated energy prices from Middle East tensions. Offsetting this, August employment fell 41,700 and the unemployment rate held at 6.4%, underscoring labor-market slack that limits pass-through from temporary price shocks. Heightened uncertainty from new U.S. tariffs and Canadian countermeasures further tilts the balance toward caution, with market-implied odds reflecting the Bank’s data-dependent stance and limited scope for near-term tightening absent clearer inflation persistence.
